Dr. Khalid Zaheer

 

      Dr Khalid Zaheer is an Islamic scholar and academic. He has a Ph.D. from the University of Wales. His Ph.D. thesis was a critique on Islamic Banking. Dr Kahlid also had an intensive formal religious education in Islam. He studied Quran from Dr. Israr Ahmed, Mawlana Amin Ahsan Islahi, and Javed Ahmed Ghamdi. He also went through a formal two years course on Arabic and Islamic learning from Al-Mawrid, in 1983-84.
Dr. Khalid Zaheer has a deep and incisive understanding of the very relevant issue of Islam and modernity and has taught courses on Islamic ethics, traditions and economics etc. at various top national institutions, including the Aga Khan University, Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), University of Central 

Punjab, Hailey College of Commerce, information Technology University, and Institute of Art and Culture.
Dr Khalid Zaheer has also delivered various lectures on Islam in UK, Canada, Australia, Malaysia, Japan and many prestigious institutions of Pakistan. Including Civil Services Academy, Administrative Staff College and PAF War College.

Dr. Khalid Zaheer was born in Sargodha in 1958. He completed his school in the same town, did his matriculation from P.A.F. College Sargodha in 1973, and Intermediate from Government College Sargodha in 1975. Later on upon moving to Lahore, he attained admission in the University of the Punjab from where he did his B. Com in 1978. Having completed his M.B.A from the same institute in 1982, he went to UK for higher study and obtained a PhD in “Banking Islam” from the University of Wales in 1994. 

Dr Khalid Zaheer received his religious education mainly through associations with Dr. Israr Ahmed (1978 to 1980), Mawlana Amin Ahsan Islahi (1980 to 1990), and Mr. Javed Ahmed Ghamdi (1980 to date). He also went through a formal course on Arabic and Islamic learning from Al-Mawrid – an institute of Islamic Sciences – from 1983 to 1984.  His career as a lecturer commenced in the Institute of Business Administration – University of the Punjab (1986 to 1990) resuming the job in 1994, as an Assistant Professor. In 1998, he joined the Lahore University of Management Sciences as Associate Professor of Islamic Studies and Ethics, where he taught for many years.  He joined al-Mawrid Institute of Islamic Research and Education, Lahore, as the Director Education and continued serving till 2009 when appointed as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of University of Central Punjab (from July, 2009 to May 2012).

In January 2000 Dr Khalid Zaheer was appointed as a member of task force of the Finance Division of the Government of Pakistan. He was also made a non-official member of the Board of Management of Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal in May, 2000; he resigned, eventually, from the post in September 2000. He has served also as an adviser to Crescent Standard Islamic Bank on “Islamic Banking” from July 2005 to June 2006. He has been the Shari’ah Adviser to Atlas Islamic Fund from 2006 to 2007.

The Administrative Staff College, National Institute of Public Administration, and Pakistan Audit and Accounts Training Institute etc. are sites where he has delivered lectures on various Islamic topics and also those relating to Islamic Studies at Universities of Lampeter, Aberystwyth, Swansea, Exeter, the Islamic Foundation in Leicester during 1990-1994 in Britain, and in various departments and hostels at the Punjab University in Pakistan from 1994 to 1998.

His writing includes his Ph.D. thesis titled, “An Enquiry into the Basic Concept of Banking as Perceived by the Spirit of Islamic Economic Justice” (1994). He authored a paper titled “Religious Tolerance: An Islam Perspective” in addition to participating as a member of the faculty in the Inter-University Short Executive Program on “Religion: Conflict and Peace?” held in Bangkok from July 21 to July 25, 2003. In an International Conference of Islamic Economists and Statisticians in Lahore in 1995, he read his article titled, “Islamic Justification of Indexation in the Modern Financial Markets”. “Why Riba al-Fadl is Unacceptable?” and “Human Rights Law and Islamic Shari’ah: Areas of Compatibility and Conflict” were published in Renaissance; a monthly Islamic journal. He made a presentation on “How Can Muslims Be Friend with Non-Muslims?” at the international Conference on “Common Values between Islam & the West”. His other significant presentations include “Significance of Business Ethics” and “What Has Kept Pakistan from Progressing?” and a paper entitled “Understanding of Riba: A Critical Analysis.”

He contributes regularly to “Renaissance, a monthly Islamic research journal affiliated to al-Mawrid. The Urdu periodicals “Ishraq”, “Tazkir”, and “Su-e-Haram” have also seen his contribution. His also appearances on different national and international TV Channels are celebrated where he presents the religion of Islam in its pure form; unadulterated by sectarianism and blind following.
